Substance Abuse Programs
Substance abuse programs provide treatment for a range of addictions including various types of drug addiction and addiction to alcohol. Substance abuse can refer to drugs, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and an range of other substances that an individual can abuse but overall most substance abuse programs are aimed at helping individuals overcome addiction to drugs or alcohol.
Inpatient vs Outpatient Substance Abuse Programs
Typically, substance abuse programs are broken down into one of two categories: inpatient substance abuse and outpatient substance abuse. Each of these programs differs in the level of monitoring that is provided as well as the types of care that are offered during the treatment program. Depending on the level of substance abuse and the severity of the addiction, an inpatient substance abuse program may be more suitable than an outpatient substance abuse program for some addicts.
Inpatient Substance Abuse Programs
Inpatient substance abuse programs provide around the clock monitoring in a medically supervised environment where the addict will live for the duration of the treatment program. These substance abuse programs typically last anywhere from a month up to a year depending on the level of substance abuse, the severity of the addiction and the individual needs of the addict. Most inpatient substance abuse programs offer drug or alcohol detox, counseling, and a range of therapeutic modalities to help the addict overcome the physical and psychological strongholds of addiction.
Outpatient Substance Abuse Programs
Outpatient substance abuse programs are unable to provide constant monitoring because they do not provide housing during the treatment process. These programs are most suitable for individuals who have already completed an inpatient substance abuse program or for those who have less complex addictions, a strong support network at home and a will to remain sober. Outpatient substance abuse programs do provide many of the same services that an inpatient program offers including counseling and therapeutic treatment but at the end of the day, the addict returns home to continue their recovery on their own.
