VA Substance Abuse Programs

VA Substance Abuse Programs

VA substance abuse programs are individualized and give special care for their mental issues.

Substance abuse commonly affects Veterans and those involved with the armed forces. Luckily, many veterans are eligible for assistance through the VA. Veterans who are eligible for medical assistance and substance abuse treatment through the VA can get the help they need to overcome a range of alcohol and substance abuse related problems and those who do not qualify for free medical care through the VA may still be able to receive treatment for alcohol or drug addiction if they pay a copayment.

Treatments Provided by the VA for Substance Abuse

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides specific treatment for substance abuse that may or may not be medication based. Many of the treatment options include therapy such as individual therapy or group sessions. Counseling sessions at VA substance abuse programs include couples counseling to help couples to recover from the negative impact of substance abuse, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) groups, and various other types of counseling aimed at helping the veteran to increase their motivation for change.

Veterans who enter the VA can expect to receive the following types of care:

  • Screening for alcohol use or tobacco use
  • Motivational outpatient counseling
  • Intensive Outpatient treatment
  • Inpatient substance abuse treatment
  • Medical Detox
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Various Drug Substitution Therapies
  • Alternative Treatments to reduce cravings
  • Self-help and support groups

Types of VA Substance Abuse Programs

The most common types of VA substance abuse programs include Veterans substance abuse programs and Army substance abuse programs. Both provide a range of addiction treatment services that are aimed specifically at individuals who have served or who are currently serving for the military, Army, Navy or another group of the armed forces.

Veterans substance abuse programs provide various types of treatment through the VA. In most cases, if you already qualify for free VA services than you will qualify for substance abuse treatment through the VA. For those who do not qualify for the free medical services low cost or reduced cost services with a copayment are available through Veterans Affairs.

Army substance abuse programs provide assistance for members of the Army or their families. A range of substance abuse treatment options are available to assist members of the Army with getting the help and treatment that they need to fully recover from substance abuse.
